The Xiaomi 12 Pro is an amazing smartphone. Of course, the 12 Pro is about to be eclipsed as soon as the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is released. But for now, the Xiaomi 12 Pro is the undisputed winner in its smartphone lineup.
Now, the Xiaomi 12 Pro has been available in China for quite some time now, but the 12 series is finally available to the rest of the world. The device is running the global version of MIUI 13 with the Google Play Store. Oh, and it is one of the first Xiaomi devices I have tested running on Android 12.
The hardware design language is clean looking and very functional
The Xiaomi 12 Pro is slightly smaller than its predecessor, although only marginally. The new version is 0.8mm shorter but also 0.3mm thinner. The overall height of the phone is lower due to the smaller screen – 6.73″ vs 6.81″. And a smaller 4,600 mAh battery versus the 5,000 mAh battery results in a thinner phone that weighs 4 grams less.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a pretty big device with a bright LTPO AMO
LED screen. The selfie camera is now in the center instead of the corner – seems to be a common trend these
days. An in-display fingerprint scanner is included and worked fine during the review period.
I like the smaller bezels on the corners which make the o
verall screen appear slightly larger. And the phone is very easy to hold, thanks to the curved surfaces on the front and back. The metal rails have a nice matte texture which helps in gripping the phone.
At the back, the biggest change is definitely the new camera module la
yout. Along with the structure, there are three entirely new 50MP cameras for main, ultrawide, and telephoto modes. The new camera module design makes the Xiaomi 12 Pro entirely professional.
The in-hand feel and ergonomics are excellent for such a large device. The build quality is top-notch and the materials used are premium. And lest I forget, the haptics on this device is easily in the same league as what you get from Samsung and Google.
The box has a clear case but it could be better
Xiaomi includes a clear TPU case in the box which is great as other device makers don’t give you much in the box these days. I just wish they would have paid a little more attention to the case of their flagship as they have improved their clear cases for their budget smartphones this year.

Xiaomi 12 Pro has a bright LTPO 120Hz AMOLED display
Xiaomi 12 Pro features a 6.73″ 1440x 3200 LTPO AMOLED display that clocks at 120Hz. The display can render 1 billion colors and has Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support built-in. There’s also just the right amount of curvature on the long edges, which didn’t cause any swiping issues during my review period.
Here in sunny Southern California, outdoor visibility was not a problem. I
didn’t need to manually toggle the brightness even once during the review period. Xiaomi claims a constant brightness of around 1000 nits and a peak brightness of 1500 nits. I don’t believe there is any reason to doubt those factory specification numbers after using the phone for a few weeks.
Xiaomi 12 Pro’s AdaptiveSync Pro allows to auto-adjust the LTPO display from 1Hz to 120Hz depending on the content. And there are a lot of options in the display settings in MIUI 13, allowing you to choose the color scheme, display resolution, eye comfort through reading mode, and AI image engine, among many other options. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a setting that works for your personal preference.
Top-of-the-line performance on the Xiaomi 12 Pro
The latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor has been given in Xiaomi 12 Pro. My review model also has 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage which is the high-end version.
The Geekbench 5 score is in line with other 2022 devices running the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with at least 12GB of RAM. My review unit of Xiaomi 12 Pro shows a single-core score of 1235 and a multi-core score of 3837. These numbers are similar to the Geekbench 5 scores seen on the RedMagic 7.
Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is built on the 4nm wafer fabrication process. The new octa-core processor has a 1+3+4 configuration and uses Arm’s latest v9 architecture cores. The main large core is the Cortex-X2, running at 3.0GHz while the three middle cores are Cortex-A710, running at 2.5GHz. Finally, there are four efficiency cores Cortex-A510, clocked at 1.8 GHz. Qualcomm also claims that the new Adreno 730 GPU is 30% faster and 25% more power-efficient than the Adreno 660 on the Snapdragon 888+ platform.
Excellent thermal management and no hiccups during regular use including gaming
Apart from the latest flagship processor from Qualcomm, the Xiaomi 12 Pro features LiquidCool technology for thermal management. It includes a large vapor chamber and three graphite sheets for better heat dissipation. I didn’t see any noticeable heating in my review time for daily tasks like browsing, scrolling, and streaming. During heavy photography or videography, the phone did heat up a bit during the camera testing sessions but there was no noticeable slowdown.
And yes, there was no problem playing Genshin Impact for about an hour on the Xiaomi 12 Pro with the latest Spring update. From a performance perspective, the Xiaomi 12 Pro is definitely one of the best smartphones you can buy in 2022.
Incredibly fast charging times via 120W Xiaomi HyperCharge technology
Xiaomi’s 120W HypeCharge technology makes the leap to its 2022 flagships. We first saw this in the Xiaomi 11T Pro last year. And if you are wondering about the 120W charging brick, fear not as Xiaomi includes it in the retail box. The Power Brick has a USB-A connector and uses 20V and 6A to get 120W of output.
As I’ve said before the actual power delivered may be slightly less than 120W. Still, 120W charging is an impressive feat and one that allowed Xiaomi to reduce the battery size to 4,600 mAh from 5,000 mAh a year ago. Unlike the Oppo Find X5 Pro, the Xiaomi 12 Pro packs a single-cell battery with support for 120W charging. Xiaomi uses a custom Surge P1 charging IC that boosts the battery’s capacity and output, which in turn increases its overall charging capacity.
Despite this custom circuitry, I strongly recommend that you use the OEM charging cable that comes in the box as 6A is a large amount of current traveling through the cable. You certainly wouldn’t want to post a viral video of your latest flagship smartphone catching fire while charging.
MIUI 13 on Android 12 supports adaptive charging and hence the device will learn your charging routine to optimize the battery health of the phone. Especially when you are prone to charge your phone overnight.
Fast charging time but screen-on time could be better
In my review time, I noticed that the phone charged to 100% in around 20 minutes. Charging the phone for about 10 minutes will give you about 70% charge which should last a full day. If you’re in trouble, toggle the refresh rate down or turn on the battery saver until you can reach the charger. The reason I mention this is that the battery life is a bit short when compared to flagships from other device makers. I was only able to get about 5 hours of SOT during my review period, so you might want to top it up if you’re planning on spending a long day.
It has built-in support for 50W wireless charging
Apart from the incredibly fast 120W wired charging, the Xiaomi 12 Pro also has support for 50W wireless charging. Alas, I cannot confirm wireless charging times as I do not have a wireless charger rated for 50W output. I hope next time Xiaomi sends us its wireless charger so that we can test it during the smartphone review.
Xiaomi 12 Pro Camera
There are three cameras of 50-megapixels on the back of the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The main camera is a 50MP Sony IMX707 sensor. The other two are 50MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras that use the Samsung JN1 sensor with different lenses. Optical image stabilization and autofocus are only available on the main camera. The ultrawide camera has a 115-degree FOV with fixed autofocus and there is no stabilization. The telephoto camera has a 2X zoom limit and no there is no image stabilization. On the front camera, there is a 32 MP, f/2.5, 26mm lens which is new.
The Camera application is simple and easy to use. You can either tap or swipe to switch modes and customize the mode in more tabs. in the top right corner, the hamburger menu lets you access additional options in each mode. In the More section, there are extras like Long Exposure, Supermoon, and a few others. all the rear cameras have Night mode is available. Auto night mode is activated by default which is quite beneficial.

Xiaomi 12 Pro has a great design, display, build quality, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. People can spend a little more for the Samsung S22 Ultra or a little less for the Google Pixel 6 Pro.
